Food bank shelves are full once more

Bounty of donations well timed for Thanksgiving

Shelves are once again full at Powell River Action Centre, Salvation Army and Seventh Day Adventist Church food banks. Action Centre manager Gina Kendrick is delighted with the windfall which will help many families within the community. Recently, volunteers with the BC Thanksgiving Food Drive (BCTFD) throughout the province collected and delivered an estimated 402,153 pounds of food for 50 local food banks during its third annual BC Thanksgiving Food Drive. Here in Powell River, the event, organized by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, included almost 70 volunteers providing over 270 hours of service to the community by visiting 4,104 homes and collecting 9,822 pounds of non-perishable food. “Our shelves are overloaded at the moment and this is overwhelming,” said Kendrick. “With Christmas and Thanksgiving coming, my heart is so happy that we will be able to give a full bag of groceries to the hungry.” Andrew Rolfson, BCTFD executive director, was very happy with this year’s success. “It was great to see how the residents of our communities came forward to support our project,” he said. “The success can be credited to communities selflessly working together donating time, talent, and means to meet the needs of others. For this, we are truly thankful.” The Powell River event was sponsored by Canada Safeway and RONA Building Centre, with volunteers coming from many service organizations and community partners.
