Participants in Tourism Powell River’s Geocache Treasure Hunt can discover the area’s hidden gems while having outdoor fun.
Starting Sunday, June 15, 10 different caches will be hidden on trails along the shoreline anywhere between Saltery Bay and Lund, according to Tourism Powell River’s press release.
“I look forward to seeing families, locals and visitors getting involved with the outdoor community, and geocaching,” said Chaya Stones, visitor information counsellor and geocache coordinator for the organization.
Geocaching involves treasure hunting by using a GPS-enabled device. Participants find their way to a specific set of GPS coordinates, and then try to find the geocache (box) hidden at that location.
“You should set aside a day or even a weekend to enjoy each location and have enough time to walk the small paths along the way,” suggested Stones. The hunt will be an ongoing event and can be started at any time.
The GPS coordinates for the first cache will be posted on the Tourism Powell River Facebook page and more information is available at the Visitor Information Centre at 4760 Joyce Avenue or online.
“Don’t forget to bring a backpack, a GPS, a camera and lunch,” said Stones. “There will be many great picnic spots along the way.”
