On this day:
In 1770, Captain James Cook discovered the Great Barrier Reef off Australia by running onto it.

In 1962, three inmates at Alcatraz prison in San Francisco escaped, left the island on a makeshift raft and were never seen again.

In 2012, the World Health Organization declared the first global flu pandemic in 41 years as a result of swine flu being reported in more than 70 countries.

Today’s weather:
The forecast for Saturday, June 11, calls for a mix of sun and clouds, a 40 per cent chance of showers in the afternoon and a high of 17 degrees Celsius. 20 km/h winds from the southeast are expected in the morning.

In the evening, there is a 60 percent chance of showers and an expected low of 10 degrees.
