On this day:
In 1815, French emperor Napoleon Bonaparte was defeated in the Battle of Waterloo and exiled to Saint Helena in the southern Atlantic Ocean, where he died six years later.

In 1948, Columbia Records introduced its new long-playing phonograph record, which allowed for 20 minutes of playing time on each side.

In 2012, the National Hockey League named Alex Ovechkin its most valuable player. The Washington Capitals’ forward led the league with 56 goals and accepted the award for the second straight year.

Today’s weather:
The forecast for Saturday, June 18, calls for a mainly cloudy day with a 40 per cent chance of showers and a high of 16 degrees Celsius. Clouds and a 40 per cent chance of showers are expected in the evening, with a low of 11 degrees.
