On this day:
In 1951, J.D. Salinger’s The Catcher in the Rye, considered one of the top fiction novels of the 20th century, was published.

In 1995, Amazon.com, which started as an online bookstore, sold its first book.

In 1999, a single-engine plane piloted by John F. Kennedy Jr. crashed into the Atlantic Ocean near Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts. Kennedy, his wife Carolyn and her sister Lauren Bessette died in the accident.

Saturday, July 16, is expected to be mainly cloudy with a 30 per cent chance of showers in the afternoon and a high of 21 degrees Celsius. The forecast also calls for clouds in the evening and a low of 12 degrees.
