On this day:
In 64 CE, the Great Fire of Rome began; it consumed most of the city for about a week.

In 1922, captain Joseph-Elzéar Bernier, who was dedicated to the pursuit of Canadian sovereignty in the Arctic, set sail to secure Canada’s claim to the far north. He was responsible for establishing some of the earliest Royal Canadian Mounted Police posts in the north.

In 1986, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution released videotape of the Titanic on the Atlantic ocean floor, giving people the first look at the wreckage of the luxury liner, which sank in 1912.

The forecast for Monday, July 18, calls for a mix of sun and clouds, 20 km/h winds from northwest becoming light in the morning, a 30 per cent chance of showers in the morning and a high of 21 degrees Celsius. Cloudy periods are expected in the evening, as is a low of 13 degrees.
