Peak columnist Robert Skender supplied today’s featured image, the view from his temporary cabin office at the mouth of Goat Lake. He finds it inspiring for writing, but also distracting when he spontaneously jumps in the lake to splash around and cool off.

On this day:
In 1821, Peru declared independence from Spain, starting the Peruvian War of Independence.

In 1914, With World War I beginning as Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia, the Toronto Stock Exchange (TSX) closed, as did the New York Stock Exchange. A week later, the British Empire, including Canada, entered the war. The TSX remained closed for three months to protect investors.

In 1984, the opening ceremony for the Los Angeles Summer Olympic Games took place.

Thursday, July 28, is expected to be sunny with a high of 33 degrees Celsius. The forecast calls for clear skies in the evening and a low of 16 degrees. A heat warning is in effect and is expected to continue through to the weekend.
