On this day:
In 1916, an estimated 223 people died in the deadliest forest fire in Canadian history, which devastated Northern Ontario towns of Matheson, Iroquois Falls, Cochrane, Porquis Junction, Kelso, Nushka and Ramore.

In 1948, after a 12-year absence due to World War II, the Summer Olympic Games began in London. Berlin hosted the previous Olympics in 1936.

In 1965, the world premiere of The Beatles’ second feature film, Help!, took place in London.

In 1981, at St. Paul’s Cathedral in London, British throne heir Prince Charles married Diana Spencer; the marriage lasted 15 years.
