On this day:
In 1914, insulin was used on a human to treat diabetes for the first time. Frederick Banting injected fellow Canadian Leonard Thompson, who was 14 years old at the time.

In 1935, aviator Amelia Earhart began an 18-hour trip from Honolulu to Oakland, California, that made her the first person to fly solo across any part of the Pacific Ocean.

In 1995, National Hockey League owners and NHL Players’ Association came to an agreement, which ended a strike that wiped out the first half of the 1994/1995 season. Teams then played a 48-game schedule, with New Jersey Devils eventually winning the Stanley Cup.
