On this day:
In 1547, nine-year-old Edward VI ascended England’s throne when his father, King Henry VIII, died.

In 1956, singer Elvis Presley made his first national television appearance on Stage Show, a program hosted by Tommy and Jimmy Dorsey.

In 1986, all seven astronauts on board the space shuttle Challenger were killed when the orbiter exploded 73 seconds after lifting off from Cape Canaveral, Florida.
