On this day:
In 1964, for his performance in Lilies of the Field, actor Sidney Poitier became the first black performer in a leading role to win an Academy Award.

In 1970, an oxygen tank on Apollo 13 exploded, crippling the spacecraft as it travelled toward the moon. The crew managed to return to Earth safely.

In 1997, Hartford Whalers played their final National Hockey League game at home, a 2-1 win over Tampa Bay Lightning. The franchise moved to Carolina to start the next season.

In 1997, Tiger Woods won the Masters tournament in Augusta, Georgia. He was the youngest person to win the prestigious major golf title and the first of partly African heritage.
