On this day:
In 1914, after colliding with SS Storstad (a Norwegian cargo ship), RMS Empress of Ireland (a Canadian ocean liner), sank in the St. Lawrence River in eastern Quebec. 1,012 of the 1,477 people on board the Empress of Ireland died.

In 1953, New Zealand’s Edmund Hillary and Nepal’s Tensing Norgay became the first climbers to reach the summit of Mount Everest.

In 1985, at the European Cup soccer final in Belgium, 39 people died when rioting broke out and a wall separating British and Italian soccer fans collapsed.
