In 1911, Britain’s King George V was crowned at Westminster Abbey.

In 1937, Joe Louis became world heavyweight boxing champion; he knocked out Jim Braddock in the eighth round of a fight in Chicago.

In 1963, Stevie Wonder, aged 13, released his first single, “Fingertips”, which was the first non-studio recording to go to number one on the Billboard charts.

In 1969, singer-actress Judy Garland, who starred in The Wizard of Oz, died at age 47 in London, England.

In 1981, Mark David Chapman pleaded guilty to shooting and killing legendary member of The Beatles John Lennon.
