On this day:
In 1715, more than 1,000 of approximately 2,500 crew members aboard a fleet of Spanish ships carrying gold, silver and jewellery, which sank during a hurricane off the east coast of Florida, perished at sea.
In 1917, the Battle of Passchendaele began during World War I for control of the Belgian city of Ypres. It continued until November 6 of that year, when Canadian troops captured the ridge that overlooked the battlefield’s front line.
In 2012, legendary rockers Bruce Springsteen and the E-Street Band performed their longest show ever (four hours and six minutes), in Helsinki, Finland.
