On this day:
In 1928, Ethel Catherwood, a member of Canada’s women’s track and field team referred to as the Magnificent Six, won a gold medal in high jump at the Olympic Games in Amsterdam. The team won four medals, including two gold, one silver and one bronze.

In 1960, after sixty years under French rule, Chad gained its independence from France.
