On this day:
In 1931, Canadian hockey legend Jean Béliveau was born in Trois-Rivieres Quebec. The hall-of-fame centre won 10 Stanley Cups as a player, plus another seven serving as an executive, all with the Montreal Canadiens. He died in 2014.

In 1939, the first Marvel Comics issue, which featured the Human Torch, was published.

In 1989, Britain’s Princess Anne and her husband Mark Phillips announced they were separating after 15 years of marriage.
