On this day:
In 1522, a Spanish ship on an expedition led and captained by Ferdinand Magellan completed a circumnavigation of the world that began in 1519. Magellan died during the voyage, in the Philippines in 1521.
In 1995, baseball player Cal Ripken set the Major League Baseball record for playing in consecutives games, at 2,131, breaking the mark set by Lou Gehrig in 1939. Ripken played his entire career with the Baltimore Orioles.
In 1997, six days after she died in a Paris car accident, a funeral was held for Britain's Princess Diana in London.
