In 1974, in a boxing match known as the Rumble in the Jungle, Muhammad Ali regained his heavyweight champion of the world title by knocking out George Foreman in the eighth of 15 rounds in Zaire.

In 1995, Federalists in the province of Quebec prevailed over separatists in a secession referendum by a margin of 50.6 per cent to 49.4 per cent.

In 2002, Run-DMC rapper Jam Master Jay was killed in a shooting in New York at age 37.
