On this day:
In 1883, Toronto Argonauts defeated Ottawa FC 9-7 to claim the first Ontario Rugby Football Union Championship.
In 1918, the Western Union Cable Office in North Sydney, Nova Scotia, received a top-secret coded message from Europe stating that on November 11, all fighting would cease on land, sea and in the air.
In 1934, the first National Hockey League penalty shot was awarded. Montreal Canadiens forward Armand Mondou was stopped by Goaltender George Hainsworth of the Toronto Maple Leafs, who won the game 2-1.
In 1963, Gordie Howe became the NHL’s all-time leader in goals when he scored for the 545th time. The record breaker came against Montreal, and he passed the Canadiens’ Maurice Richard in the process. Howe ended up scoring 801 goals, a record which stood until Wayne Gretzky reached number 802 in 1994.
In 1969, popular children’s series Sesame Street made its television debut.
