On this day:
In 1836, the siege of the Alamo began in San Antonio, Texas.

In 1917, demonstrations and armed clashes began in Russia, which was later dubbed the February Revolution, eventually resulted in the demise of the Russian Empire.

In 1954, the first mass inoculation against polio was conducted at Arsenal Elementary School in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Virologist Jonas Salk's vaccine is still one of the two versions used today, along with Hilary Koprowski's live polio vaccine.

In 1968, basketball legend Wilt Chamberlain became the first player in NBA history to score 25,000 points.
