On this day:
In 1882, outlaw Jesse James was shot to death in Missouri by one of his gang members, Robert Ford.

In 1968, civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. delivered what turned out to be his final speech. He was shot and killed 20 hours later.

In 1988, Mario Lemieux won the National Hockey League’s scoring race, ending Wayne Gretzky’s eight-year run as top scorer.
