On this day:
In 1952, a B-50 Superfortress plane dropped a 31-kiloton atomic bomb in Nevada. It was the first nuclear explosion shown on television.

In 1970, the first Earth Day was observed.

In 2003, hockey hall of fame goaltender and current New York Islanders’ coach Patrick Roy played his final National Hockey League game with Colorado Avalanche, an overtime loss to Minnesota Wild in game seven of a first round Stanley Cup playoff series.
