Grand opening a great success

Shelter Point buildings replace those destroyed by fire

A grand opening of the Shelter Point caretakers’ residence and concession took place on Texada Island last month.

In a media release, Powell River Regional District said it is thrilled with the results and response from the public and grateful to the people and businesses involved.

Over 160 people attended the event, including a large contingent from Tla’amin Nation. “They spoke about the importance of Shelter Point Park to the residents and visitors of Texada Island, about the significant heritage value of the site and about the importance of such a celebration that brings all people together as well as the local governments,” the district wrote in the release.

Tla’amin Elder Dr. Elsie Paul blessed the building site and the Cheechlem Chi-Chia Canoe Group performed traditional song and dance. Archaeologist Colleen Parsley of Aquilla Archaeology spoke of the importance of preservation and a museum display has been created at the site to house some of the artifacts located in the area.
