Together, we live in and enjoy the traditional territory of the Tla’amin Nation and remain grateful for their friendship and partnership as we move forward.
I want to start by thanking the residents of our city for the vote of confidence they gave to our council in this past election in returning five of the seven incumbents and adding two new members who are quickly becoming valued members of the team. Council has worked hard over the last term to improve life in Powell River and it was humbling to see that our constituents agreed with the new course that has been charted for the community.
Over the past year our community has seen a further diversification of its economy, and new residents have migrated to its shores from other parts of the province, country and further abroad. Real estate sales continued to be strong in 2018, and housing starts were up significantly from prior years as investors have moved forward with new developments in the community, which will produce a more diverse mixture of housing stock.
In addition to this, the city has attracted new investment and industry to its airport; worked with Santé Veritas Therapeutics to realize its development goals; and provided support in ensuring the long term viability of Catalyst Paper Corporation (soon to be Paper Excellence).
The city has also worked closely with numerous local stakeholders to address the social well-being of all of its residents. Great progress was made in moving forward new affordable housing developments, implementing the Community Social Plan, and reducing the community’s environmental footprint through its Sustainability Committee.
I would also like to take a moment to congratulate the city’s outgoing chief administrative officer, Mac Fraser, on his retirement and thank him for his years of service, and welcome his replacement, Russell Brewer, who council is very much looking forward to working with in the future.
Our sincerest thanks go out to all city staff for the efforts they put forth in ensuring the best possible service is provided to everyone in our community.
On behalf of City of Powell River Council, I offer best wishes to all for a happy, healthy and prosperous new year.
