Powell River Board of Education chair Aaron Reid

2018 has ushered in a number of new and exciting initiatives with the focus always being kept on improving student achievement.

During 2018, the Board continued to work on goals around engagement and connections, academic excellence and system sustainability.

The newly elected Board will be developing a new four-year strategic plan at the start of 2019.

The Educational Enhancement Fund has allowed us to work with teachers to put more supports directly into classrooms. The revived District Parent Advisory Committee (DPAC) has been a valuable voice in the school district and we appreciate the work contributed by parent volunteers within our schools; we couldn’t do it without you!

The redesigned curriculum from kindergarten to grade 9 was rolled out last year and with that we have many teachers working on curricular projects to support student learning.

Our Reporting and Assessment Committee has been hard at work developing new reporting, such as e-portfolios, and we are working toward online reporting at Brooks to better communicate with parents and students.

We honour and acknowledge the Tla’amin Nation for entrusting us to work with them in educating their children. We have been working with our Indigenous team to embed Indigenous learning in our schools and lessons. Our reconciliation project continues with a welcome pole being carved at Henderson Elementary.

Recently, we have retained a coordinator for our school garden programs as well as to develop dual-credit horticulture programs in our district. Our goal is to provide hands-on experiential learning while finding a way to be sustainable as well as to ensure that no student goes hungry.

We continue to upgrade our facilities with new playground equipment being installed at Edgehill Elementary as well as electrical and mechanical upgrades at Kelly Creek and Brooks.  Texada Elementary has had a new bouldering wall installed in the gym.

On behalf of my fellow trustees, Russell Brewer, Dale Lawson, Jackie Timothy and Doug Skinner, we wish you a healthy and happy holiday season.
