Powell River Chamber of Commerce president Cory Carr

This past year has seen another tremendous gain, marking a new high waterline for economic activity in Powell River and qathet Regional District. This success has been accompanied by strong membership growth at the Powell River Chamber of Commerce.

2018 has been an exceptional year in terms of the residential development that has begun in Powell River. Several large-scale projects have broken ground, while several others await final approval. This has provided a significant opportunity for many local businesses, of whom many have benefited in the surge in demand for skilled labour and materials. Much-needed residential units will provide added relief to the tight housing market.

The 15 per cent reduction in fares by BC Ferries has had an impact on the ability for people and goods and services to make it to Powell River and back out at a reasonable cost. Restoration of our previously cut routes, along with additional routes being added, has restored our connection with the South Coast and Vancouver Island. The restoration of the seniors’ discount ensures that we continue to be a desirable location for retirees; items the Powell River chamber has fought vigorously for in years past.

We at the chamber have many things to be thankful for, including the $25,000 grant we received from Powell River Community Forest in support of beautifying and renovating our building on Wharf Street, welcoming businesses, citizens and tourists alike.

The opening of Townsite Market on December 9 represents a continuation of the economic revitalization and diversification that is occurring in the historic Townsite business district. Our local Townsite Brewing continues to win awards for its beer and the overall experience it creates for its patrons.

In 2019 we look forward to a continuation of the residential development that we’ve seen in 2018. We at the Powell River chamber aim to promote an active and receptive business community to all.

We would like to extend a sincere thank-you to all of the businesses that support us and to the customers who loyally support our businesses. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.
