Holiday hampers ready to be filled

Donations help families in need

Hampers containing food and toys are on the minds of Powell River and District Christmas Cheer Committee members.

Each year, the committee prepares and plans the hampers with donations from the community. Last year, 309 families, including 305 children, received the hampers to help them over the holiday season.

The committee is a fundraising organization and has set up various ways in which the public can help. Financial donations can be received by cheque made payable to The Powell River and District Christmas Cheer Committee, mailed to 7318 Glacier Street, Powell River, V8A 5V4, care of treasurer Cherrie Hunter.

People are encouraged to participate in the adopt-a-family program, which entails taking over the responsibility for purchasing Christmas dinner groceries and gifts for members of a selected family. More information is available by contacting Sandra Carmen 604.485.2142 or Lesley Ford 604.485.6682.

A third way is for donations of toys or gifts for a teen. To find out more about this option, readers can call Marilyn Lewis 604.485.2621.

The committee will hold its annual general meeting 2 pm Sunday, November 2, at Trinity Hall, Powell River United Church, 6932 Crofton Avenue. Everyone is welcome to attend to find out more about participating in the Christmas cheer committee, or to offer the name of a family in need.
