Kicking the Clutter: Do it yourself home makeover

How to have a functional, beautiful home without breaking the bank

You don’t have to be a professional organizer or interior designer to have a functional and beautiful home.

There is no need to spend a fortune on a huge renovation to make a meaningful difference. With some creativity and effort, you can give your home a fresh look that can uplift you.

Here are eight home makeovers that are affordable and achievable:

Decide to declutter

Clutter can make a space feel small, uninspiring and overpowering. Schedule a day to let go of anything that is no longer useful and beautiful. You can sell items that are still in good condition. Use that money to buy things for the makeover of your home.

Reorganize furniture

One of the easiest ways to refresh a space is to rearrange the furniture. Play with different approaches until you find one that makes the room feel more spacious, inviting and comfortable. Don’t cram your room with too many pieces of furniture. Every piece of furniture should serve the purpose to relax, play or create.

Do a deep clean

A good deep clean can work wonders for any room. Scrub the floors, clean the windows, dust the shelves and wipe down the walls. A clean space instantly feels brighter and more inviting. Open all the windows to get the fresh air in with the scent of blooming flowers. Consider Old Country Clean cleaning products.

Bring nature in

Plants are a great way to add life and colour to a room. You can reproduce plants from cuttings, or buy affordable plants from a garden centre. Visit the farmers’ market for fresh plants and flowers, locally grown. Visit a local thrift store for a huge selection of beautiful vases.

Plan to paint

Painting a room is a relatively cheap and easy way to give it a new look. To avoid the overwhelm, paint one room at a time. Ask your family and friends to help you. Make sure to feed them after. Homemade pizza or delicious chili is filling and inexpensive.

Splurge on new pillows and throws

A few new pillows and throws can instantly change the look of a room. Look for patterns and colours that complement your existing décor. Make sure to carry a splash of your favourite colour through every room in your house.

Change your décor

Many of us get bored easily with the same room layout, and same décor day in and day out. Switch décor from one room into another. It doesn’t cost you anything but the effects on your mood can be great. Also, you may be surprised at how different pieces stand out and make statements in other rooms.

Create a gallery wall

If you have a lot of pictures spread out on every horizontal surface, get them together and create a gallery wall. You purchase frames in all sizes and shapes. Hanged pictures or art are much easier to keep dust-free.

Enjoy living in your functional and beautiful home.
