Kicking the Clutter: Lack of motivation means a change is needed

Time is what life is made of, so don’t waste it

When we feel unmotivated, most likely we need to change something in our lives. You don’t feel good about yourself but are unable to change the situation.  

Your lack of motivation could be a reaction to your past or a current situation. It can be triggered by a lack of confidence, a lack of clear directions, not living up to your expectations, or being controlled by others. 

• You feel lethargic and uninterested

• You dislike living in a disorderly home 

• You are a perfectionist, which can lead to procrastination

What is laziness?

Laziness carries a certain stigma, so we tend to deny this trait. People use all kinds of excuses for not finishing the tasks they have to. Time and productivity are wasted, and the quality of life is scarce.

The constant avoidance of the chores we don’t like can lead to depression, low self-esteem and a lack of confidence.

Seeing others achieve success can be a motivator or cause resentment toward others. 

Laziness and lack of motivation might look the same but they are very different from one another. They are interrelated, triggering each other. 

Here are some signs that might help you distinguish between laziness, lack of motivation or depression.

Laziness is a planned and preferred time. You enjoy your idleness, more likely not feeling guilty about it. However, when it comes to daily chores, laziness begins to have a different impact. You have the desire to have a functional life but are not willing to put effort into it. 

• You’d rather have someone else do the work

• You enjoy and prefer doing fun tasks

• You do what you want instead of what is required

Is depression avoidable? 

After a while of being neglectful with your life, depression sneaks in. It’s often a misunderstood mental illness that can negatively affect every area of your life. Nobody who suffers from depression wants to feel desperate and helpless. But when the daily struggle sets in, the hope for a better life vanishes.

I have been in a situation where depression took over my joy for life and hope of ever getting better. With extensive counselling and help from family and friends, I overcame the debilitating depression. And you can, too. Make small and positive changes in your daily life.

Depression is a serious illness. Seek professional help. A doctor or therapist can provide you with the proper medication and coping methods.

These are the warning signs:

• You have lost interest in daily life and feel physically and emotionally drained 

• You feel irritable and restless

• You feel sluggish or frustrated
