CHRONIC DISEASE: In order to raise awareness about multiple sclerosis (MS), a group of Powell River residents gathered at city hall to raise the MS flag, which will fly for 10 days.

From May 21 to June 1, the multiple sclerosis flag will be flying at city hall.

At 10 am on May 21, a group gathered on the lawn of city hall for the flag-raising ceremony and to create awareness about multiple sclerosis.

Mayor Dave Formosa read a proclamation at the May 6 council meeting for multiple sclerosis awareness month, which led up to the flag raising.

Formosa said multiple sclerosis is a chronic, often disabling neurological disease affecting an estimated one in 340 Canadians and more than 1,200 British Columbians. He said multiple sclerosis symptoms vary widely and may lead to problems with numbness, coordination, vision and speech, as well as extreme fatigue and even paralysis, with no known cure or no known cause.

Formosa said the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada is the only national organization in Canada that supports multiple sclerosis research and services for the people with multiple sclerosis and their families, contributing more than $140 million toward research.

BC will continue to lead the way in multiple sclerosis research through one of the world’s most renowned multiple sclerosis research facilities at the University of British Columbia, said Formosa.

“Together we will find ways to enhance the quality of lives for people affected by multiple sclerosis and to find a cure to end multiple sclerosis,” said Formosa.

He then proclaimed the month of May as multiple sclerosis awareness month for the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada in and about the City of Powell River.
