Organizers are putting out a call for businesses in Powell River who want to participate in Texada Island’s annual summer sandcastle parade.
“We would love anyone to participate,” said Jane Waterman, who is helping to organize the parade for her third year. “With Sea Fair having a parade, I thought there might be some Powell River businesses that want to come over.”
While the parade this year does not have a theme, Waterman said she wants to encourage people “to take part and have fun.”
Previous year float favourites in the parade have been from the Texada Garden Club and the Royal Canadian Legion Texada. Organizers encourage people to bring their vintage cars to the parade as well. The RCMP and firefighters also participate.
Sandcastle weekend changes from year to year depending on the tides, and organizers look for a low tide occurring in the middle of a Sunday. This year it is planned for July 6 and 7. The parade happens on the day before the sandcastle competition.
The parade is about 30 minutes long and it travels through Gillies Bay from about half a kilometre south of the Gillies Bay General Store up to the RCMP station. At the end of the parade there will be activities for children and a slow pitch tournament at the ball park across from the beach. Later that evening a laser light show is planned at the Shelter Point campground.
“It’s a whole island event,” said Waterman. “It’s quite an involved weekend and it’s a lot of fun.”
The sandcastle competition will happen at the Gillies Bay beach. There is no need to pre-register. Participants can just show up on the Sunday morning at 10:15 am.
