A piper from Texada Island has brought home accolades after competing in the BC Highland Games and Scottish Festival.
Evelyn Seymour, who plays bagpipes in Powell River’s Clansman Pipe Band, travelled to Coquitlam with her husband to compete in the individual solo competition for the games on June 21.
Competing against five other pipers, Seymour won first place in the adult 2/4 march category playing the tune Captain Norman Orr-Ewing, and third place in the Slow Air category playing Loc Rannoch and Loc Duich.
She explained that the slow air category is reserved for tunes which are slower and played at more formal occasions like military inspections.
Having played for only five years, Seymour thought the competition would help her build more experience. She said she did not expect to win.
Seymour added that she had always been intrigued by the bagpipes and then decided to give it a try after learning that the Clansman are always looking for more musicians who are willing to learn how to play or who want to improve their “rusty technique.”
“We’re so fortunate to have the pipe band here and to have the quality leaders we have,” said Seymour.
