Powell River Orphaned Wildlife Society fundraiser a hit

Mini-golf enthusiasts played the course for a good cause

On Friday, August 11, the first-ever Putting for PROWLS mini-golf event, a fundraiser for Powell River Orphaned Wildlife Society (PROWLS) took place at Putters Mini Golf on Marine Avenue, across from Willingdon Beach.

“Despite the downpour, $793.44 was raised, which will go a long way to helping rescue, rehabilitate and release local wildlife,” said PROWLS volunteer Jane Short.

Participants who played a round of golf (50 per cent of the proceeds) or who only purchased a raffle ticket, supported PROWLS founder Merrilee Prior and volunteers at the rescue centre located in qathet. The organization has rescued and cared for more than 400 birds and animals this year alone, according to PROWLS.

Short said Putters approached the animal rescue nonprofit about organizing a fundraiser, and that PROWLS and Putters want to make the event an annual one.

As a volunteer with PROWLS, Short, who is helping support the organization with fundraising efforts, had a bird rescued by PROWLS herself. She praises Prior, who runs the facility, for providing a much-needed service for the qathet community.

Birds and other wildlife are cared for, rehabilitated and put back into the wild if possible. PROWLS works in partnership with other larger animal hospitals and animal rescue centres on the lower Sunshine Coast and Vancouver Island, and sometimes transport of an animal is necessary.

Windows, vehicles and cats are some of the causes for animals getting hurt. For more information about the organization, go to   prowls.org.
