Powell River Orphaned Wildlife Society helps beaver hit by car

PROWLS: Rescue of the week

It has been a busy beaver year so far at Powell River Orphaned Wildlife Society (PROWLS). PROWLS received a call from the lower Sunshine Coast about a beaver that had been hit by a car.

A woman had been sitting with it for two hours, and it wasn’t going anywhere. Did we want it?

“Absolutely,” said Merrilee Prior, owner and operator of PROWLS.

The ferry crew and shore staff were wonderful. The beaver was not happy, the crew said.

Be careful, they added. It was after 10:30 pm when he arrived at our facility, and he was definitely grumbling. Or groaning.

When the cover was removed from the kennel, it was clear that he was busting out.

He had almost chewed the front of the kennel right off. He was moved into a large kennel with a big tub of water and some willow branches and left for the night.

This appeased him, apparently, because he only chewed the rim of the water dish.He was sent off to MARS Wildlife Rescue in Courtenay that morning, and again, the ferry people took really good care of the patient.

Again, the beaver was not happy with his transport, chewing a large hole in the kennel. The examination at MARS found no significant injury, and they diagnosed a concussion.

In a week, after eating constantly and chewing up his pool, he was sent back to his pond.He waddled out, turned as he reached the water, as if to thank us, and swam away. Success.
