Powell River sea cadets hold annual review

Members receive awards in several categories during ceremony

Members of the public, parents and friends were on hand to view 18 members of 64 Malaspina Royal Canadian Sea Cadets Corps Malaspina at their 65th Annual Cadet Review Ceremony on Saturday, June 1, at Timberlane Barracks in Powell River.

The event included seamanship, model building, marksmanship and damage control organized by the cadets themselves.

The corps paraded before reviewing officer and North Island-Powell River MP Rachel Blaney, who was part of an inspecting party that included Vancouver Island Division Navy League of Canada representative Julie Hillsden and local Navy League president Alicia Clansey.

Awards were presented to the following cadets: Top Phase 1 Cadet, AB Shelby Pauls; Top Phase 2 Cadet, MS Gabriel Albert; Top Phase 4 Cadet, PO1 Jarod Clansey; Top Cadet, PO1 Jarod Clansey; Seamanship Award, MS Jenson Harold; Citizenship Award, MS Gabriel Albert; Participation Award, OS Tristan Munro; Sail Proficiency, AB Shelby Pauls; Attendance Award, PO1 Jarod Clansey; Dress and Bearing, PO1 Eoin Erickson; Most Improved Cadet, PO2 Samuel Van Es; Lord Strathcona Medal, PO1 Eoin Erickson; Legion Medal of Excellence, PO1 Jarod Clansey.

Two Four-Year Cadet Service Medals were presented to PO1 Jarod Clansey and PO1 Gideon Rosypskye.

The local sea cadet unit is commanded by Lieutenant (N) Kenneth Stewart, assisted by training staff: Lieutenant (N) Glenn McCallum CD; Lieutenant (N) Alan Walker CD; and volunteer instructors Alia McPhee, Tricia Forster and Ivan Szulhan. The cadet parade commander for Saturday's parade was cadet Petty Officer 1st Class Gideon Rosypskye.

The aim of the cadet organization is to develop in youth the attributes of good citizenship and leadership, promote physical fitness, and stimulate an interest in the activities of the Canadian Armed Forces.
