To support the organization’s purpose to empower through knowledge, First Credit Union offers multiple scholarships annually in each of the communities it serves: Bowen Island, Powell River, Texada Island, Courtenay and Cumberland.

In this allocation, First Credit Union provided $18,000 in scholarships.

According to a media release, these scholarships support First Credit Union members who are pursuing accredited post-secondary education, including recent high school graduates and adults returning to studies. First Credit Union values the impact these individuals make in their unique communities and local economies, the release stated.

In 2020 First Credit Union supported the following Powell River members in their educational pursuits: Catherine Forsythe (animal health and technology, Thompson Rivers University); Jason Schreurs (MFA creative nonfiction, University of King’s College); Jessica Leavens (MA social work, University of Northern British Columbia); Joya Muma (BA, art history, Concordia University); Kori Addams (GS Diploma focus on social work, Thompson Rivers University); Laura Kissick (recreation therapy, University of Lethbridge); Saverio Colasanto (BA English major, University of Victoria); and Tai Uhlmann (MA environment and management, Royal Roads University).

“We’re proud of our members; empowerment and capacity building is at the heart of our community work at First Credit Union,” stated community relations specialist Caitlin Bryant. “Our annual scholarships are an opportunity for us to show our values at work and further align with our vision to help build thriving, vibrant communities.”

Deadlines for scholarships are typically in late June to early July. More information can be found at firstcu.ca/Community/GivingBack/Scholarships.
