Seniors who wish to remain living at home are receiving a helping hand though a new independent living program.
inclusion Powell River, formerly known as Powell River Association for Community Living (PRACL), has received a contract through United Way of the Lower Mainland to set up Powell River Better at Home, which will provide services to help seniors continue living independently in their own homes.
“These services vary from community to community,” said Lisa Daniels, program coordinator. “They are designed to complement existing services and are based on the unique needs of local seniors.”
Despite the program receiving some funding, seniors will also be asked to pay a fee for services based on their income, but some services may be free.
Better at Home will start with a focus on friendly visiting, transportation and grocery shopping, said Daniels, adding that those priorities were identified in a study done of the area. Services will be provided to seniors living in the city core and gradually expand out.
As the program grows, Daniels hopes to include friendly visiting, transportation, grocery shopping, light housekeeping, light yard work and minor home repairs.
Volunteers and some paid staff from inclusion Powell River will provide the services, which will be community-based and include non-medical home support.
“By helping seniors remain at home long, they support diverse, inclusive and vibrant neighbourhoods for everyone,” she said.
