Leadership systems
At the qathet School District (qSD) meeting on October 25, Allison Burt and Kristen Brach (both directors of instruction for qSD) gave a presentation about the BC Ministry of Education-led leadership strategy that examines how to bring mindfulness and self-reflection into every level of the school system. Brach and Burt said, “it [Compassionate Systems Leadership] mirrors mental health and compassionate leadership [initiatives] in schools across the qathet school district.”
Name change
School District 47 is going through the official process to change its name to qathet School District and qathet School District Board of Education. The district will no longer be referred to as a number. However the formal process will take time, according to Lawson.
Budget update
qSD secretary-treasurer Steve Hopkins provided a budget update at the October 25 meeting.
“September 30, 2023, represents the end of the first month of the school year, but also the first quarter of the fiscal year,” said Hopkins. “Intuitively we don’t have a natural monthly burn rate, which is why after one quarter of the year, we still have 86 per cent of the budget remaining, and now that we are well into the school year, I will start to have a lot more to report in the next nine months.”
