Powell River’s parks, recreation and culture department is getting programming underway, city council members were told at their June 11 meeting.

Councillor Jim Palm said with regard to Powell River Recreation Complex, he had a telephone conversation with Ray Boogaards, director of parks, recreation and culture.

“He mentioned to me that registration for day camps started on June 6 and I just want to make a note to the public that registration is going well,” said Palm. “If you were planning to send your sons or daughters to a camp starting up soon, led by our managers at the complex, that you should make your call early before those spaces fill up because there are limited spaces because of the situation we are in with COVID-19.”

Palm said he has also had a number of emails and telephone conversations from individuals in the community regarding the opening of the recreation complex. He said since the city’s budget was brought in, the city has said the recreation complex won’t be opening up until the city has 85 per cent of its taxes collected. People using the ice are a little worried, according to Palm.

“Mr. Boogaards assured me that they are meeting with each user group and are having lengthy discussions, hearing concerns,” said Palm. “They plan on having a meeting with all of the user groups on June 15.”

Palm said Boogaards has made calls to a number of other jurisdictions to get a feel for what is happening in other communities so he can use that in his discussions. Palm added that Boogaards has also been talking to health authorities and the BC government to ensure nothing happens at the recreation complex until all safeguards are put in place.
