A small gathering was held at Veteran’s Memorial Park in Powell River on November 11, 2020 [above], to recognize Remembrance Day. Residents were asked to stay away last year due to COVID-19 restrictions at public events. Access to the park will also be restricted for the 2021 gathering.

Several events held annually each November 11 by Royal Canadian Legion Branch 164 - Powell River will not take place for the second year in a row due to COVID-19.

Cancellations include the service inside Dwight Hall in Townsite and parade that follows, as well as the breakfast and lunch for veterans and parade participants in the Legion’s lower hall. Veterans and members will not be attending qathet region schools this year, nor will they take part in services traditionally held at Willingdon Creek Village, Evergreen Care Unit and Kiwanis Manor.

A service will take place at the Cenotaph in Veteran’s Memorial Park in Townsite, starting at 10:55 am. Access to the Cenotaph area will be restricted, as it was in 2020.

The ceremony will follow its traditional schedule, with O’Canada, the Last Post, two minutes of silence, Lament, The Rouse, the act of remembrance, prayer, and the Royal Anthem. A limited number of wreaths will be placed at the Cenotaph prior to the service. The 100th year of the poppy will also be commemorated.

A special block will be placed on the Cenotaph, as in past years, for people to deposit a poppy after the ceremony as a remembrance of those who have served their country. To view a video and read more details about the 100th anniversary of the poppy, go to legion.ca/remembrance/poppy-100-anniversary.

Royal Canadian Legion Branch 164 will be open as usual at 6811 Alexander Street but no remembrance activities will be held.
