Discusses outdoor learning centre
At its February 20 meeting, Powell River Board of Education discussed outcomes of a January meeting on the Outdoor Learning and Sustainability Education Committee. Outdoor Learning Centre (OLC) reopened with many programs after its mid-winter closure. The Future of Forests innovative program for grades five and six six students is continuing and a new sweat lodge is now active. Vancouver Island University’s Adventure Tourism program is also taking place at the OLC and, according to the board, the centre is booked until September, including for multiple school visits, weddings, a family reunion, a survival skills training program with Canadian Armed Forces, cultural-focused camps for Tla'amin Nation youth and a girls’ choir from Houston, Texas.

Supports bike path
Correspondence received at the February 20 meeting included a letter from School District 47 superintendent of schools Jay Yule to BikeBC in support of City of Powell River’s 2018 application for BikeBC funding, specifically for the phase five, Marine Avenue-Alberni Street-Hemlock Street connector. Yule said in the letter that information from past surveys indicates children identify having a safe route to school as a major barrier to cycling in Powell River and the city's proposed cycling enhancements for 2018 will improve safe access to Brooks Secondary School.
