Seedy Saturday has reached its 10th anniversary. With 2015 being declared the Year of the Soil, it is a great time for every backyard gardener to start sowing seeds.
This annual seed-swapping event will take place Saturday, March 14, at Powell River Recreation Complex.
In preparation, the community is invited to attend a seed-packing and pot-luck party starting at 6 pm Wednesday, January 14, at Powell River Community Resource Centre, 4752 Joyce Avenue.
Organizing and packing the seeds into envelopes is an essential part of preparing for Seedy Saturday, plus, attendees will have the chance to learn and ask questions about the local seed bank project.
Powell River Farmers’ Institute, host of Seedy Saturday, will provide stamped envelopes ready for filling with seeds plus everything needed to clean and sort the seeds. The seed-packing begins at 7 pm and will likely finish around 8:30 pm.
For the community seed swap, March 14, heirloom, open-pollinated seeds are especially welcome. People with favourite seeds purchased or passed along from family, neighbours or friends, can be swapped. Recent seed catalogues and gardening books are also welcomed by donation to the community swap.
Anyone wishing to donate seeds, but unable to attend the seed-packing party on January 14, can contact Wendy Devlin at [email protected].
