Student Life: Distractions and work ethic

We all become distracted, especially if we are doing something we have no interest in. A number of things can be a cause for distraction: friends, for example. We have all been that friend at least once, at a time when we just cannot focus.

We have all been that friend at least once, at a time when we just cannot focus. Usually, we become bored and turn to our friends. We will try to talk to them or make jokes, anything to keep from doing work. There are moments when we are conscious of this, and then moments when we are not, but it is always a little embarrassing to be called out on our bad behaviour.

In the long run though, it is best to just let people get work done in class, even if we cannot. We should try not to disturb the other students.

Another cause for distraction is definitely technology. It is a hard thing to say, because most of us love our phones, computers and tablets, and the world is beginning to rely on technology, but it is not always good for us.

Whenever we are using the internet to do a school project, there is almost always that temptation from advertisements or links. Youtube is especially bad for this. You can spend countless hours going from video to video, watching funny cat videos or fail videos, when you should be doing research or writing an essay.

The internet can be so time-consuming. With everything at our fingertips, it is just so easy to become distracted.

One thing that helps immensely is time management. I find that time management can often be overlooked, especially in class.

One of the best ways to work sufficiently is to work for at least 20 to 30 minutes and take breaks of five minutes in-between. That way, you can use the five-minute break to relax and calm down, making it easier to stay focused and accomplish your goals.

If we can apply this method more often in class, perhaps it will not be so difficult to deal with our workloads.
