ORCA (On the Road with Children’s Activities) Bus, in collaboration with Canada’s Coast Guard, made an extra special stop in Powell River’s south harbour last week.
Along with usual activities aboard the bus filled with early learning activities, families met with officers and took turns touring a Coast Guard vessel.
“Kids love machines and boats so this was a perfect fit,” said Elise Statham, Success By 6 and ORCA Bus coordinator, explaining the program seeks out opportunities to introduce parents and children to different partners in the community.
Children at the event, all under six, had a chance to tour the CCGS Cape Caution, one of the Canadian Coast Guard’s 36 cape class motor life boats, and the Westview 1, a H753 zodiac.
All children also received a free colouring book about water safety.
Denis Taylor, officer in charge, said, “We’re always into informing the public about safety on the water.”
