Summer help for food banks

Small acts of kindness add up

A Powell River woman is hoping that just 90 minutes will help make a difference.

Kitty Clemens is calling on Powell River residents to participate in Food Share Day, an event that her daughter Charlotte Almeida started promoting in March in Vancouver. Almeida had to do something that “gives back” for a course she is taking in school and decided to centre her project around helping food banks at a non-holiday time of the year, said Clemens.

“A lot of people make donations during Christmas or Thanksgiving, but the rest of the year there’s little going on,” she added.

Ninety-four thousand people use food banks in the province, she said. “In Powell River there are between 600 to 1,000 people.” Between 24 to 30 per cent of those are children, she added.

She is looking for people who can donate their time and some non-perishable food items. For 90 minutes from 5:30 to 7 pm on Friday, May 23, she and other volunteers will go door-to-door in Powell River’s neighbourhoods collecting food for the city’s food banks.

The same day is Powell River’s Compassion Challenge Day and tie-in is a natural fit, said Clemens.

She is encouraging people to take non-perishable food to Willingdon Beach to donate during the Compassion Challenge that day when Powell River residents will try to perform 10,000 acts of kindness.

“We can make a difference,” said Clemens.
