Tara Teng wins Miss Canada crown

A former Powell River resident has been crowned Miss Canada 2011.

Tara Teng, Miss BC 2010, won the award on Saturday, January 29 in Montreal.

“I’m so excited for this new opportunity ahead of me,” stated Teng in a press release. “Not only do I have the honour and privilege of representing my beautiful home of Canada to the world, I now have a larger platform to speak from.”

Teng, a Fort Langley resident who attends Trinity Western University, is passionate about human rights issues. She has met with Prime Minister Stephen Harper to discuss human trafficking and is organizing a Freedom Week event in March to bring awareness and change to these social issues.

Teng is the first Miss Canada to come from British Columbia since 1992. The pageant has been running since 1946.

Teng lived in Powell River for 16 years before moving to Langley in 2004, the summer before starting grade 11. Teng always wanted to participate in the Miss Powell River Youth Ambassador pageant but moved the year before she would have been eligible to compete. She said that being raised in Powell River provided her with a strong foundation that led to her beliefs and passion for getting involved.
