Powell River Community Response Fund has awarded an additional $26,465 to be distributed to three different projects affected by COVID-19, bringing the total amount donated to local community organizations to more than $142,465.
This is the fourth round of awards in the Powell River region.
“The non-profit sector in the qathet Regional District is working overtime during COVID-19 to ensure critical social supports remain intact or pivot to meet emerging needs,” stated Caitlyn Bryant, community relations specialist with First Credit Union, in a media release. “Times like these make me really proud of our community and the care we show for our more vulnerable populations.”
This round of community response funds were allocated as follows:
• Texada Seniors Housing Society ($3,000) – Support ongoing development of the newly formed society and plans for affordable housing projects and programming in support of seniors living on Texada Island.
• ORCA Bus ($13,000) – Support costs associated with enhanced health and safety protocols and to pivot programming in the face of staffing and logistical concerns due to COVID-19.
• Powell River Assist and Senior Citizens Association Branch #49 ($10,465) – Support emergency food access and food security for the most vulnerable seniors, in collaboration with other community organizations, health authorities and first nations.
Allocated funds provide frontline services to vulnerable populations affected by COVID-19. Services could include: food security; financial wellness; health and hygiene; home care or personal support services; information and navigation; legal support; mental health and wellness; shelter; safety; social inclusion and learning, and transportation, according to the media release.

Powell River Community Response Fund is a special fund to rapidly deploy essential relief to organizations providing frontline services to those disproportionately impacted by COVIID-19. The partnership is led by Powell River and District United Way, Powell River Community Foundation and First Credit Union, with support from the regional social planner, representing City of Powell River, qathet Regional District and Tla’amin Nation.
