“Lights up” as they say in the business! Townsite Actors Guild is back with live theatre from October 13 to 16 at the Forest Bistro.

For the past two years, Townsite Actors Guild has only been able to produce two radio plays: It’s a Wonderful Life and Sorry, Wrong Number. Respecting COVID-19 restrictions, Zoom was used for rehearsals and final performances by the actors.

Not to deter the guild from continuing to provide entertainment in the community and having to face a lockdown due to the pandemic, the creative forces of Stephanie Miller, Stephen Miller and Barb Oliver wrote a full-length comedy for the stage called WeedLube…a slippery slope.

“The story is loosely based on an imaginative fantasy about two women in a small town who started a business and struggled to get it off the ground,” explained Stephen. “How many of you have tried your own business idea out, and after spending lots of money and putting in tons of hours, only found yourselves saying ‘where are the customers? Why are they not breaking down the doors? What’s wrong?’ And then a new idea comes and you think about it, and wonder why no one else has tried it, and would it really work.”

In WeedLube, the two “budding” young women say “what if ?…” and the rest of this idea lies in a funny and witty comedy.

The play opens up on the day marijuana is legalized in Canada. The two main characters, Stevie and Carol, facing eviction by their landlord and struggling for sales, come up with a way they hope will save their business and excite the townsfolk.

“The story is original, hilarious and outrageous at times; even though there is craziness, the reality is that this could actually be happening,” said Stephen. “Stevie and Carol, played by Barb Oliver and Stephanie Miller, will take us on a ride that plays with our imagination and tickles our funny bones.”

In the spirit of such great acting duos like Laverne and Shirley, Lucy and Ethel, and Thelma and Louise, the two leads find themselves in real life but crazy situations that will have the audience “laughing throughout their journey.”

WeedLube…a slippery slope, is an original comedy written, directed and acted by local creative talent. The entire cast and crew are from the region.

“The fully renovated Forest Bistro is ideal for the play,” said Stephen. “Chef John will be preparing a special tapas menu for theatregoers who come early.

The play will be running at 7 pm in the evenings on October 13, 14 and 15; a matinee is set for 2 pm on October 16.

Tickets for the show are available at Forest Bistro (4463 Marine Avenue, Powell River) and Base Camp (4548 Marine Avenue, Powell River).
