Moving into adulthood can be an exciting and daunting time for any young person. For those with developmental disabilities or other barriers to employment, many local resources are available to help with the changes.
Youth Transition Fair takes place 3:30-5:30 pm on Thursday, February 8, at the ARC Community Event Centre at Jean Pike Centre.
Aimed at youth between the ages of 13 to 24, the fair is being organized jointly by Community Living BC, Inclusion Powell River and BC Ministry of Children and Family Development (MCFD).
“We’re an isolated community, but we have a lot of support available for youth and young adults,” said MCFD event coordinator Jackie Milsom.
Visitors can expect to see a number of different booths hosted by City of Powell River, various employment programs and the fair’s community partners. This is the second year and organizers are hoping it will continue to grow.
“It’s an opportunity for people to come see what’s available locally for youth who have special needs in our community,” said Milsom.
Resources include recreation opportunities, employment-based programs, family support and a chance for youth and their families to connect with participating groups, as well as one another.
Having all the different resources together under on roof is incredibly valuable, said Inclusion coordinator of family support services Lisa Beaulieu.
“We should all be a community team for someone who just needs a little help, guidance and information, so it’s not so daunting to go out on their own,” said Beaulieu. “The answers can all be in one room and they have the opportunity to see something they maybe wouldn’t have known about.”
