WINNIPEG — RCMP say an officer was responding to a mass stabbing on the Hollow Water First Nation in Manitoba, when her cruiser crashed with a stolen vehicle driven by the suspect in the attack.

Supt. Rob Lasson says the suspect died at the scene of the crash, and the officer was taken to hospital with critical injuries but is expected to recover.

Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew says the officer "stopped a man on a rampage."

RCMP identified the attacker as 26-year-old Tyrone Simard and say he killed his 18-year-old sister.

Seven others were found injured in two different homes in the community and are in hospital.

Mounties say officers continue to investigate and are going from house to house making sure there are no other victims.
